Best Breakdown Explanation on Vedic Astrology

I’ve been star-struck since I was in grade school. No, not by who is gracing Rolling Stone magazine covers (although I did get weepy when I met and was velvet lace hugged by Stevie Nicks).

I digress… So what about stars as in lunar asterisms and blinking lights in the open night sky?
The stars’ placement and meaning bewitched me because I shared my birthday with my mother (minutes apart), which as a teen I found myself wanted to clarify my identity in comparison to my parents and well, everybody. Enter three earthwoody ladies who owned a crystal shop in my hometown where I could buy books on Buddha, runes, candles and gemstones that were associated with my zodiac sign. Like any good rebel, I started researching and found that not all Virgos are alike and that sun signs aren’t the whole picture in any sense.

Daily horoscopes are for amusement, they aren’t a science. Astrology, from a vedic perspective, balances math, science and intuition. The snap shot of where everything was the moment of your birth is unique to anyone else and you can get as detailed as you like with it.

For nearly two decades I’ve met with astrologers, read voraciously, googled and blog digested many avenues of info but once learning about the most ancient perspective, it was hard for me to turn back. The zodiac is the zodiac and the attributes/archetypes are still in place minus two items (rahu and ketu are more significant than pluto and uranus) however it’s the positioning of the planet that has changed (as has my perspective).

This came recently and is the perfect explanation of Vedic Astrology for a western mind to comprehend… enjoy!

Vedic Astrology explanation by Bill Levacy

What is Vedic Astrology?
Vedic Astrology is an astrological system from India. Jyotish, as it is also called, has its roots in the ancient Vedic civilization of India. Some scholars indicate it is over 5000 years old and pre-dates Western Astrology. The word “Veda” means pure knowledge, hence the term “Vedic” astrology.

Vedic Astrology helps us analyze behavior and forecast events so we can anticipate good outcomes for our actions. Vedic philosophers tell us that the best way to get out of trouble is not to get into trouble in the first place. Vedic Astrology provides a road map for effective living, in tune with the laws of nature.

How is it different from Western Astrology?
Vedic Astrology fixes the position of planets as you see them in the sky right now, employing marker stars to identify the start of the first point of Aries. The Western systems mark the start of Aries in terms of the earth and its spring equinox season. Its zodiac does not represent astronomical positions as accurately as does the Vedic system. The two systems are about 23 degrees apart in marking the starting point of Aries due to Vedic astrology adjusting for the back wobbling of the earth’s axis. The sky that we see at the time of the equinox is not the same sky that people saw 2000 years ago. The earth has shifted back on its axis, making it appear as if the signs have preceded.

In addition, the Vedic system has literally hundreds of predictive techniques based on lunar signs, on multiple chart divisions and the like. Vedic Astrology puts more emphasis on the Rising Sign and the Moon than on the Sun as the Western system does, and has deep roots in philosophy and development of consciousness.

What makes Vedic Astrology accurate?
Vedic astrology has been around benefiting people for many thousands of years. In addition to the 12 Sun signs of the zodiac, Vedic Astrology uses 27 Moon signs or secondary constellations called “Nakshatras”. The Vedic system employs a set of 16 types of birth charts, not just one, and uses a forecasting system called the “Vimshottari Dasa” which tracks events in the birth chart up to a 120 year life period.

Vedic Astrology has very strong connections to spiritual development and consciousness and suggests hundreds of remedial measures to counteract negative influences in the chart. So Vedic astrology not only can help indicate what behaviors and time periods might be favorable or unfavorable, it also has methods to help us fortify ourselves to deal with life events more powerfully.

The sites for jyotish with computer systems to get your chart are at best, clunky but play around with them and see what you can find. My suggestion? Find a jyotish in your city and have a session to learn more!!!

For starters here is where I play:

The most legitimate vedic scholar/jyotish I’ve heard of is in LA, here’s their website.

Full Moon in June: Transformation in Scorpio

Today marks the Full moon in Scorpio – Tuesday, June 2, 2015 (9:19am on the Pacific Coast).

Scorpio is about the unseen, the darker, the transformation, secrets, passion, sexuality, intensity, emotions- yup whole lotta lotta here. At the same time that we reach this peak full moon, Saturn is retrograde in Scorpio too!

What does that mean?

Basically, intense times in the mind and emotions (moon) and powerful karmic lessons that move slow and deep (Saturn in retrograde).

Oh and to just make it all the more transformy, add to the fact that Mercury (communication/travel/electronics) is retrograde too for another week.

This is a great time to reflect on the deeper aspects that you’ve kept hidden from yourself and be in your truth quietly, kindly and thereby powerfully.

Check out more vedic perspectives on this full moon on MyAstrology.net…

This Full Moon is to harmonize the energy that was started on the New Moon in Taurus. Themes of intensity and drama will dominate, as a way to affirm and sensitize the things we value in our life. – See more at: http://www.mydailyastrology.net/join/news/full-moon-in-scorpio-june-2-2015/#sthash.RDze7ZzJ.dpuf

And for another view that I found particularly enlightening… through the Peacocks’ Eye:

Happy New Moon (Vedic aka Old School Style)

new moon

I know y’all are all about the Lion times of Leo coming up but according to Vedic planetary science goodness we’re still up in Cancer for this new moon and boy oh boy, girl oh girl this feels spot on…
“The New Moon happens in Cancer On August 6, around 5:45 PM Eastern time. Cancer is a sign where we connect to the heart, in-depth – rather than riding the waves of emotion, which is more on the surface. Unfortunately because we lack introspection, most are very disconnected from the heart. In fact, this is why we tend to mistake something as beautiful as “love” as inherently painful and tragic. The truth is, love is the most beautiful force in the universe, but we are mistaking the feeling that comes from unmet desire and the psychology of the ego and its separateness, for “Love”. – Vedic Astrology Center

Happy New Moon to you all…

First Full Moon of Spring 2013

Spring, spring, spring into action and happy happenstance.  :-)

Any opportunity to set intentions and clear the slate for a new chapter, I’m IN!  This Wednesday marks the first full moon of the season, spring is here.

My favorite go-to-site for starry related inquiries, Cafe Astrology, has great insight as usual:

A Full Moon occurs on Wednesday, March 27th, 2013, at 5:27 AM EDT.

On Wednesday, a Full Moon occurs when the Sun in Aries opposes the Moon in Libra. The Full Moon is a time of culmination and the promise of fulfillment of that which was started at the New Moon. It is an emotional time – a time of romance, fertilization, and relationships.

The Aries-Libra polarity is a relationship axis, where Aries represents “self” and Libra represents “other”. Where Aries is about self-assertion, Libra is about compromise. The energy of the Libra Moon is the awareness of the need for relationships and all that comes with maintaining them — compromising, negotiating, graciousness, and balancing. The Aries Sun, on the other hand, is self-assertive, leading, and personally courageous. This Full Moon urges us to strike a balance between meeting our personal needs and tending to the needs of a significant other, and between independence or autonomy and dependence or companionability.

The Libra Moon is diplomatic, equality-minded, and fair-minded. The Aries Sun, however, values authenticity over tact, and is energized by independent efforts. The Full Moon illuminates this conflict.

This Full Moon is especially powerful, as the Sun aligns with Venus, Uranus, and Mars, opposing the Moon, and squaring Pluto. Changes are necessary, and resistance will only serve to attract opposition. A sextile to Jupiter alleviates some of the tension.

With the Moon full and bright in the sky, symbolic “illumination” occurs in our own lives. However, these new feelings and revelations are emotional ones, as emotions burst forth into our consciousness. It’s time to express ourselves, and to let things out of our systems. Of course, we might want to exercise some care while doing so, knowing that what is coming out of us is new and not particularly rational as yet. Full Moons are about exposing or illuminating issues that are already there, but that have not yet been dealt with. Where does the Full Moon fall by house in your natal chart? Read more here.

This phase of the Moon occurs at 6 degrees and 52 minutes of Libra opposite the Sun at 6 degrees and 52 minutes of Aries, affecting people born with personal planets and points at approximately 3 to 11 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) most significantly.

Happy Full Moon luscious ones!

“The Moon Woman” by Jackson Pollock

I hope you’re enjoying the firey Leo presence in your heart and howling at the moon.

Give your prayers to flames and stars tonight, Jupiter goes direct tomorrow (January 27, 2013).

What does that mean?

My fave little go-to-astrology source expresses exactly that (Cafe Astrology even gets specific to your astrological relationship to the transit).

Here’s the download but go to the site and to learn more :-)

What Jupiter’s transit through Gemini means to you…

Jupiter enters Gemini on June 11th, 2012, and stays in this mutable air sign until June 25th, 2013. See how this transit affects each zodiac sign below.

Jupiter’s effects are to expand our experiences, our knowledge, and our understanding. Jupiter represents optimism, growth, generosity, joy, and abundance. In Sagittarius, Jupiter urged us to increase our cultural and spiritual awareness, to expand our higher minds, to broaden our experiences, and to have faith in the universe. In Capricorn, Jupiter urged us to define goals, seek out tangible results, act ethically and maturely, and to take a disciplined and step-by-step approach to realizing our goals. In Aquarius, Jupiter urged us to think and act in terms of social reform and to value humanitarian action, to think progressively and to value freedom, individuality, group goals and visions. In Pisces, Jupiter urged us to give of ourselves, and to embrace compassion and imagination. In Aries, Jupiter urged us to make our own opportunities, to believe in ourselves, and to take charge of our lives. In Taurus, Jupiter urged us to enjoy and appreciate what we already have, and to adopt a patient approach to achieving our goals.

Gemini is an Air sign. With an Air sign Jupiter, we are mentally adventurous, ready and willing to learn, into “mind expansion”, and less attached to our values than others because we are generally quite impartial and open-minded. We are able to see many sides to an argument. More specifically with Jupiter in Gemini, we attract the most good fortune when we use our wit and ingeniousness, are versatile, sociable, curious, and put others at ease with friendliness and sincere curiosity.

During this Jupiter in Gemini cycle, we place strong emphasis and value on the intellect. We see opportunities to grow and succeed through intellectual, verbal, and written channels. We are more inclined to believe that intelligence and knowledge are the major keys to solving problems. Communication and contact are valued.

Jupiter’s zeal can supersede moderation at times. It can expand the more negative qualities of a sign, just as it can expand the positive traits. Its zeal and enthusiasm is well-intentioned, but it can blind us to our immoderate behavior. In Gemini, negative manifestations include lack of follow through, too many ideas without a plan to set them into motion, gossip, too much information, fickleness, and indecision.

However, the “higher” vibration of Jupiter looks for perspective. Jupiter’s “perspective” isn’t a detached, analytical, or detailed look at any given situation, but an overview–a look at the “big picture”. With Jupiter, ideally, we are able to rise above pettiness, mundane concerns, inconveniences, and the like. Where Jupiter is currently transiting in your own chart is generally where you are inclined to find your “joy” at this stage in your development.

Jupiter spends just over a year in Gemini. The last time Jupiter transited Gemini was from June 2000 to July 2001.

Giving Thanks for New Moon Reflections

Magic is afoot in the cool air and dark nights.  Kisses are more haunting and spellbinding, music seems to bathe you and seep into your skin, food just tastes better and eyes get a bit more misty with nostalgia.  New moons are time for reflection, ultimately within and finding the groundedness in the midst of what may feel like an ocean of emotion.

As I sat last night in a much awaited child’s pose on my yoga mat, I decided to keep my eyes closed during the majority of my practice.  It was the first class I could go to in weeks as I’ve been too weak from a persistent cold to do much of anything, let alone vinyasa flow.  I felt such gratitude.  Thanksgiving isn’t just about giving thanks to the external but also to ourselves and knowing when to be still, sweet and surrender.  When we focus too much on the outside/the external we literally go without (without, with out ) and we won’t have much left to give.

New moons are the perfect time to get real and deep or simple and sweet.  Appreciate everything on the menu, focus on what’s most nourishing for you right now (and don’t judge yourself for it).

Big shifts in the stars are making lots of folks wobbly and humbled by emotions, setbacks and whopping big changes.

Sometimes when I hear a lot of the same thing from friends and even people around me in stores, lines, gas stations I’ll peep what’s happening in the world of astrology to see what’s up. Emotions and uncertainty seem to be on the menu especially this week.  Cafe Astrology is one of my favorite astrological info hubs and I love the name (let’s be honest, I’m a foodie in all that I do).  There are a number of resources on the site relating to planetary alignment so totally check it out, it’s Ella approved. ;-)

Being that today is quite auspicious, I’m reposting the word on the street about our new moon in Scorpio (yes the Sun and Saturn are too)…

New Moon Solar Eclipse on Tuesday, November 13th, 2012, at 5:09 PM EST.

Tuesday afternoon, a New Moon in Scorpio occurs. This lunation is a more potent New Moon, as it is a Total Solar Eclipse, and represents a new beginning in the fixed water sign of Scorpio. It’s a time when we can focus on some of the constructive traits of the sign of the Scorpion–passionate, resourceful, focused, probing, deep, and perceptive–and consider how to positively incorporate these qualities into our lives. Scorpio New Moons are generally good for working on our self-mastery skills. We may want to pinpoint the things in our lives that make us feel out of control, such as addictions and debts, and work on freeing ourselves of these emotional burdens. This New Moon cycle is also an opportune one in which to explore what is missing in our lives that leads us to engage in these self-destructive behaviors. This cycle represents an opportunity to rid ourselves of the “junk” in our lives–material and spiritual. With this potent Scorpio energy, we have the chance to make important changes in our lives.

This Total Solar Eclipse occurs on November 13th at 5:09 PM EST at 21 degrees and 57 minutes of Scorpio. Its effects can be felt up to six months after the actual date of the eclipse. In the sign of Scorpio, matters related to intimacy, control, power, money, and sharing will be a strong focus on a personal level. This eclipse is about new beginnings regarding all of these matters.

One of Scorpio’s “lessons” involve learning to dig deeper into the mysteries around us instead of always being content with status quo. Taking the time to understand others’ motives can enrich our feelings of intimacy, forgiveness, and sense of meaning. Scorpio also teaches us that dedication to one meaningful relationship or undertaking can be significantly more satisfying than spreading ourselves around. Here, “quality over quantity” applies. We might want to use this cycle to work on focusing on and developing one special project or relationship in order to help add purposefulness and depth to our lives.

With retrograde Mercury square Neptune at the time of the eclipse, we should watch for fuzzy or wishful thinking. Intuition is heightened, but the details of our plans now may be hidden, overlooked, or unclear.

My magic 8 ball says “outlook unclear AND good”, what about you?

Shakin’ it under the moon,

Oh My Stars, Venus in Virgo

In ancient times, the stars served as our guide.  We looked upwards to    know which direction to sail, literally and figuratively.  Now with GPS we  don’t need to know the planets and stars so much to find our way home but  what about insights of a more human nature?

astrology |əˈsträləjē| (noun): the study of the movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world.

Ancient observers of the heavens developed elaborate systems of explanation based on the movements of the sun, moon, and planets through the constellations of the zodiac, for predicting events and for casting horoscopes. By 1700 astrology had lost intellectual credibility in the West, but continued to have popular appeal. Modern astrology is based on that of the Greeks, but other systems are extant, notably those of China and India.

Your daily horoscope is sometimes hit or miss, I get it.  There’s lots of talk about the calendar having changed and a lot of astrological information seems out of context (i.e.  ”September” is the ninth month when “sept” derives from the latin word for seven).  And then there’s the Chinese, Ayurvedic & Mayan take on the stars- what does it all mean?

Well, friends these are questions I ask my Magic 8 ball all the time and I still love me some good horoscope forecasting, it’s often more on-point than the Weather Forecast.   ;-)

So, without further ado I give you the status on what’s up for this next month in the realm of Love, ahh yah Venus!

VENUS is in Virgo from August 21-September 14. This is a time when we express our love through practical means and gestures–running errands, doing detail work, or just “being there” for our lovers. Essentially, we fuss over our partners, sometimes a little too much! Our availability and accessibility is a sign of love.

Love needs to make sense and have a purpose with Venus in Virgo.

Virgo is an Earth sign, which is sensual but also quite practical. We could easily feel guilty if we are too self-indulgent during this cycle. We can be a little shy and prone to worry. We pick up on many different cues, attempting to analyze every detail of our lovers’ reactions and responses. We could worry ourselves sick agonizing over details! In the process, we can miss out on the bigger and perhaps more meaningful cues. As well, Virgo is a sign that can live very much in the mind in the middle of an experience, failing to enjoy the moment. Self-consciousness can get in the way of enjoyment. Rendering services to others can fill a need, and can be an expression of love. The shadow side of this position is being overly critical of our partners, picky, or worrisome.
